Industrial experience

John has spent over 40 years working in and alongside the petroleum industry on both research and operational aspects of biostratigraphy, first with British Petroleum (14 years) and later as a founding Director of StrataData (28 years).

John's main biostratigraphic projects have included studies on Tertiary and Mesozoic foraminifera and algae in Middle East and Pakistan, Tertiary and Mesozoic marine ostracods from N.Africa, Middle East, S.America and Europe and non-marine ostracods and charophytes from China, S.America, W.Africa and Europe.

He has carried out major stratigraphic studies on Abu Dhabi, the Tertiary of Sirte Basin, Libya, Canadian Arctic, offshore Ireland, Chinese offshore and onshore basins, Peru & Ecuador and the Jurassic and Carboniferous of NW Europe. In addition, John has experience of well-site operations and overseas fieldwork in Europe, China, FSU, N.Africa and Greenland.

In Biochron John is focusing on numerous windfarm engineering and geohazard projects, integrating his experience as a biostratigrapher with other dating techniques such as radiocarbon (14C) dating and oxygen isotope studies in areas including offshore West Africa, Mediterranean and Caspian Seas,  Gulf of Mexico, The Far East, NW Shelf Australia and offshore Netherlands.

John also provides palaeoenvironmental interpretations for archaeological studies using his knowledge of ostracods, charophytes, foraminifera and a wide range of other invertebrate groups.
